Latest plans from Cheshire East

Cheshire East presented the latest version of the plans at the Make it Macclesfield breakfast on Friday 23rd.

A quick summary of the proposed changes:

– Cinema and Silk Street/department store will be slightly lowered in height.
– A copper facing has been added to the Churchill Way frontage.
– The Silk Street shop fronts have been given a more varied appearance.
– The cinema building has been broken up and redesigned to look less bland.
– The car park is to have a ‘living wall’ -i.e plants growing over it.

CEC have assured us that the presentation on the proposed changes will go online shortly. We will let you know as soon as there is something to look at. However, these designs are still not part of a formal planning application, so are still subject to change.

Timings:

– Plans will be released for consultation in Jan 2013
– Consultation period is six weeks
– Planning Committee decision March / April 2013

It is good to see CEC listening to concerns about design. But – and it’s a very big but – the overall concept and footprint remains the same. Cheshire East presented a view of Macclesfield as a destination shopping town, with lots of what were described as ‘aspirational’ shops. They believe that Macclesfield can buck the trend of failing retail and that national chains are queuing up to come here. We do not believe this to be the case. The only retailer signed up so far appears to be Debenhams.

We will continue to work to show the risks of this development, and to demonstrate that there are alternatives.
